say "NO" to tanning beds!
With High School prom dances right around the corner, it is important that you and your high school age sons and daughters are aware of the risks of using tanning beds. 1) Did you know that in the not so distant future tanning beds may be illegal to those under 18 years of age because of the danger and damage they do? 2) There is a 10% tax that may be added to tanning that is currently pending in the legislature! 3) Healthy glowing pale skin is more fashionable than tanned skin...check out recent Vogue magazines. Would you rather have skin that looks like those models or the cast of Jersey Shore?! 4) Instead of making you look younger, tanning actually ages your skin. 5) The UV radiation intensity in a tanning bed can be up to 15 times stronger than that of the midday sun. Do you really want to expose your skin to rays that powerful? 6) UV Radiation is in the same class of danger to you as mustard gas, plutonium, cigarettes and arsenic! 7) If you use a tanning bed before the age of 35 you increase your risk factor of getting Melanoma by 75%!
Just remember skin cancer kills and getting skin cancer from tanning beds is entirely preventable. Tanning beds are to skin cancer as cigarettes are to lung cancer.
we do make a difference!
With the funds that are donated by non-profit and other organizations like the Monica Jensen Foundation, scientists and doctors are able to continue clinical studies and research that are making a difference every year. Recently scientists created a new vaccine called GP100 that could someday trigger a patient's immune system to systematically kill off skin cancer cells before they have a chance to spread further. GP100 was shown to help shrink tumors and delay the progression of skin cancer. New studies combining the vaccine GP100 with an immunotherapy drug called Interleukin-2 has shown improved response rates and progression-free survival for patients. It was found that about 22% of patients given this combination of drugs showed their tumors shrink by at least half!
These clinical trials and continued studies are made possible by funding from businesses and individuals like you. Your continued financial support is crucial in finding a cure to Melanoma.
